Discovering Nepal’s Hidden Highlands: Sunapati–Sailung Trail Emerges as a Promising New Trekking Destination
Nestled between the rolling hills of Ramechhap and the panoramic highlands of Dolakha, a new trekking route is drawing attention as a potential destination for nature...
The four-day field assessment explored the possibility of connecting Sunapati Rural Municipality in Ramechhap with the iconic Sailung region in Dolakha through a dedicated trekking trail. The study found that the route offers a unique blend of mountain landscapes, traditional villages, religious sites, tea gardens, and authentic local culture—elements increasingly sought by both domestic and international travelers.
A Journey Through Nature, Culture, and Spirituality
The proposed trail begins in the mid-hills of Ramechhap and gradually ascends toward the breathtaking grasslands of Sailung, a destination renowned for its spectacular Himalayan vistas and spiritual importance. Along the way, trekkers can experience rural Nepal at its most authentic, passing through Tamang settlements, agricultural landscapes, and culturally vibrant communities.
One of the highlights of the route is the opportunity to explore lesser-known attractions such as Sunapati’s scenic tea gardens and Lakhpatimane Danda, offering panoramic views and peaceful surroundings far from crowded tourist circuits.
The trail also connects visitors to the sacred sites of Sano Sailung and Thulo Sailung, revered by both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Situated at more than 3,000 meters above sea level, Sailung is known for its rolling green hills, sunrise viewpoints, and tranquil environment, making it an ideal destination for trekking, meditation, photography, and nature-based tourism.
Community Hospitality at the Heart of the Experience
Beyond its landscapes, the route offers visitors an immersive cultural experience. During the study visit, local residents in Lamagaun welcomed the team with traditional Dhime music, Tamang Damphu performances, and colorful cultural displays.
Such community participation highlights the growing interest among local residents in developing tourism as a sustainable source of income while preserving their traditions and way of life.
Growing Potential for Sustainable Tourism
Tourism officials involved in the study emphasized that the future development of the trail should focus not only on attracting visitors but also on protecting the area's environment, cultural heritage, and historical assets.
The region already attracts a steady flow of domestic travelers. According to local tourism entrepreneurs, Sailung currently welcomes thousands of visitors each month, drawn by its natural beauty, homestay experiences, local cuisine, and easy accessibility from Kathmandu.
With proper trail management, infrastructure improvements, and destination promotion, the Sunapati–Sailung route could become one of Nepal’s emerging short-trek destinations, offering an alternative to more crowded trekking regions.
A New Route Waiting to Be Explored
For travelers seeking untouched landscapes, authentic cultural encounters, and rewarding mountain views without venturing deep into remote Himalayan terrain, the proposed Sunapati–Sailung Trail presents an exciting possibility.
As plans for the trail move forward, the route has the potential to transform the tourism prospects of both Ramechhap and Dolakha while offering visitors a fresh way to experience Nepal’s diverse natural and cultural heritage.
